Seán McCann bought his first guitar in 1989 and has been singing ever since. For 20 years, he was a founding member of the world-renowned folk-rock band Great Big Sea. Millions of albums sold, countless sold-out tours, and an Order of Canada marked a career of incredible success.
But behind the smile and the shanties, Seán was hiding a dark secret. He was using alcohol to numb the pain of childhood abuse. "I found myself singing songs about love while living a life of anger," he recalls.
In 2013, he left the band, put down the bottle, and picked up his guitar. He began to face his demons, using music as his weapon. Today, he is a celebrated solo artist, an author, and a fierce advocate for those struggling with mental health and addiction issues.
